-Isabella, a novice nun, a virtuous and chaste young woman who faces a moral dilemma when her brother is sentenced to death for fornication (unlawful sex). She condemns her brother's act, but she pleads for his life in several intense scenes with Angelo. The role requires an emotionally available and vulnerable actor; age range: 19 to 29.

-Angelo is a deeply flawed man who is the epitome of a politician, i.e., "Do what I say, not as I do." He is a towering hypocrite who attempts to blackmail Isabella into sleeping with him in order to save her brother, Claudio. He becomes obsessed with Isabella and strikes a bargain with her that eventually backfires. Requires a skilled actor who can wear the mask of morality while violating the laws and moral tenets of the state. Age range: 28 to 50.

-The Duke disguises himself as a friar in order to observe how his subjects will behave in his absence. To this end, he enlists Angelo's help and gives Angelo supreme decision-making authority. Seeking experienced actor; age range 28 to 50.

-Claudio, Isabella's brother, is an impetuous young man sentenced to death for impregnating an unmarried woman. He begs Isabella to save his life by betraying her vows of chastity.
Age range: 20's to early 30's

-Mariana, a woman of the court who was spurned by Angelo, because she lost her dowry in a shipwreck that killed her brother; age range late 20s to 50.

-Escalus, one of the Duke's loyal lords who tries to counsel Angelo to be more merciful. Age range: late 20s to 50s

- Lucio, described by Shakespeare as a "fantastic," is a flamboyant raucous character who provides much of the play's comedic content. Friend of Claudio's and Isabella who assists them through the ordeals they encounter in the play. Age range: 20s to 40s

-Mistress Overdone runs a brothel in the city and provides much of the bawdy, raunchy humor in the play. Actor must be comfortable with some nudity and must be a singer. Age range: 30s to 40s

-Pompey works for Mistress Overdone and he carries much of the satirical moments of the play. He is a bawdy riotous character who has no respect for those in authority. Age range: 30s to 40s

-The Provost runs the prison and is responsible for executing all of Angelo's edicts. Looking for a big, tall rugged actor; age range
30s to 50s

- Elbow is a typical Shakespearean cop: lazy, confused, and full of malapropisms. He arrests people for licentious behavior and provides comic-relief throughout the play. Actor must have good comedic chops and the ability to produce physical comedy. Age range: 30s to 50s

-Barnadine, a prisoner in the jail, who is to be executed together with Claudio. Tough guy who plays all the angles. Age range: 20s to 60s.
